Why Having a Long-Distance Relationship with your Best Friend is Totally Worth It

By Christina Oehler on September 15, 2014

The first year away at college is never an easy one. Nothing is harder than leaving behind your family, boyfriends and girlfriends, and best friends and getting thrown into an entirely new environment with strangers that are supposed to replace those people.

Going to a different college than my best friend was especially hard at first, and for the first couple months I was worried we wouldn’t stay in touch. However, being away from a person who knows me better than I know myself made me realize how much closer we have become.

Even though it won’t feel like it at first, there are some advantages to having a long distance relationship with your best friend.

Having Someone Who is Always Excited to Hear from You

Being able to call or Skype your best friend will become one of the highlights of your week. It’s nice to have someone to always fall back on when moving away from home feels like another world. They will always be excited to hear about the updates in your life, probably even more so than your new friends, and you will realize their excitement is yours.

I have found myself bragging about my best friend’s accomplishments to strangers, because you will find you want everyone to know about this amazing person you get to call your best friend.

Someone To Come Home To

Going home from school is always an incredible feeling; a home-made meal, the bed you know and love, and seeing your pets make you suddenly tempted to drop out of school and live in your parent’s basement. But homesickness takes a whole new meaning when you finally see your best friend for the first time and share the laughs and tears that come with the scariness of moving away from home in person.

You will realize how much they care about you, and why distance doesn’t matter. Plus, if your close enough with their family, you’ll have more than one home to come home to on your holiday breaks.

Someone to Visit

Almost as soon as school starts, everyone wants to visit their friends at other schools for football games, holidays and date events.  And if you are on a big campus like the University of Illinois, you’ll always find someone who wants to take a road trip with you to see your best friends.

Luckily you two know each other well enough to take care of each other after the celebratory night-out when you’re seeing each other for the first time in months. My best friend drove all the way from Nashville to be my date to formal, and I had a better time with her than I would with anyone else.

Someone to Share Closets With

Being at two different schools, it will be pretty easy for you and your best friend to never be outfit-repeaters. Over school breaks and through FedEx, you’ll find how easy it is to share wardrobes from across the country so you always have the perfect look. It’s especially fun to hear how everyone loves your sense of fashion from thousands of miles away.

Someone Who Inspires You

Your best friend should be someone who not only lifts you up when you’re down and understands your sense of humor, but someone who compliments your character in ways you don’t always realize.

Although we have totally different career path ideas, and will probably live entirely different lives as we grow, my best friend never fails to text me everyday reminding me how proud she is of me.  When I watch her hard work and all of the incredible accomplishments she’s made, I am reminded why I surround my self with people like her. Even though you won’t be able to see each other, your best friend will always find the best ways to bring you up on your lowest days.

Everyone has their own reasons for why they connect with their best friend so well. But when the school year gets busy and new friends become your daily acquaintances, you’ll remember never to take for granted your best friend and all that they do for you, even from millions of miles away.

It’s true what they say, distance does make the heart grow fonder.

You’ll find that distance never really mattered!
