10 Reasons College Students Need Netflix In Their Lives

By Victoria Robertson on October 28, 2014

At this point in time, Netflix accounts are more common than not, especially for college students on a budget. A one-stop-shop for movies and TV shows that you don’t even need to leave your couch to access? Perfection.

So for those of us that have come to realize how amazing Netflix is, and even for those of us who are still on the road to this realization, here are 10 reasons college students need Netflix in their lives.

1. For binge-watching shows:

The fact that the term “binge-watching” is universally acknowledged is kind of a tip-off that Netflix has had a major impact on our lives.

Not only is there an abundance of options as far as television shows go, but you can also watch entire seasons at the click of a button.

Want to re-watch every season of “The Office” for the twentieth time? No problem: Netflix has you covered.

So whether you’re a latecomer to a series and need to catch up or you feel the need to revisit one of your old favorites, Netflix is the perfect place for binge-watching.

2. To satisfy our need to watch Disney movies:

Who doesn’t love that nostalgia brought on by a good-ol’ animated motion picture from Walt Disney Productions?

We’re in college, and even if we weren’t, Disney would be an acceptable film choice. And if we have learned anything from Disney, it’s that no one really grows up. So as perpetual children, I think a little Disney magic is always in order.

While they may not have all the Disney classics available on Netflix, you can’t really go wrong with the choices you’re given.

You can go with any of the Disney princess movies or cry your eyes out with “Dumbo;” either way, Netflix is right there to walk you down memory lane.

3. To watch horror films you never would have otherwise seen:

Need a scary movie night with the roommates? Log in to that Netflix account and let the night unfold.

I can’t count the number of times I’ve come across a truly fantastic film just because it happened to be on Netflix, so don’t underestimate the horror films you come across on your account.

It’s just an added bonus that scrolling through Netflix and judging what films are actually scary is half the fun.

4. For that celeb crush:

We all have that one celebrity we can’t get enough of: we watch all their films, record their appearances on talk shows and basically stalk their every move. So having all their films in one convenient location is practically a celeb-stalker’s dream.

Netflix will have not only their more famous roles, but also their earlier films that no one knows about. Well, that is, no one except for you.

So go ahead and love your celeb. No one is going to judge your Netflix queue, even if it consists entirely of Leonardo DiCaprio films.

5. For procrastination purposes:

College isn’t exactly a breeze, and sometimes homework piles up to amounts we don’t want to ever deal with. What better way to procrastinate than with Netflix?

You’ve got endless hours of procrastination at the click of a button, and while it may be dangerous, it’s fantastic at the same time.

Homework has a way of getting done, and we know that we’ll eventually get to it, but maybe for now, “American Horror Story” needs to take top priority.

6. It’s the perfect night in:

Everyone is guilty of the occasional fake illness excuse to avoid going out. So what is it that’s done with our newly found time?

You guessed it: watching Netflix.

We can sit in our apartments in pajamas with a bag of popcorn and a blanket and watch movies until three in the morning.

Who needs the bars when you can spend a fantastic night on the couch with your Netflix account?

7. It’s the best hangover cure:

There’s no way around it: you drank way too much last night and you’re sick. Drink coffee all you want; we both know it isn’t going to work.

You could spend the day in misery but, as a college student frequently on the party scene, you know better than that by now.

So go ahead and thank your lucky stars that you’ve got Netflix to keep you company as you lay in bed for the rest of the day nursing that hangover.

8. It’s the only acceptable way to spend a Sunday:

Sundays are the worst. At least Monday knows how terrible it is and accepts it; Sunday is just unapologetically awful.

Really, Sunday is just a waste of a day. So why not make it a little better with some Netflix?

You know that tomorrow you’re going to have to go to class and be a human being again, so use Sunday as more of a lazy day than anything else. Combine that with your Netflix addiction and you just made a terrible day at least semi-decent.

9. It’s an emotional companion you can always count on:

Single? Not a problem. Netflix is the perfect relationship fill-in and it knows exactly what you need.

It has tearjerkers for those days you need a good cry, comedies for days you could use a pick-me-up and even rom-coms for the rare, but still present, days you want to watch a perfect relationship that’s impossible to live up to.

No matter your emotional state, Netflix has an answer to it, far above anything a significant other could ever provide. Netflix is the relationship you’ve always wanted, and that you’ll always have.

10. So you always have the best film selection:

While many of our DVD collections are impressive to say the least, the addition of a Netflix account really has the potential to set yours apart.

You have not only all of your favorite films, but also the ability to satisfy any filmgoers’ taste. Whether it be horror, action or drama, you’ve got more than enough options.

Before you know it, people will be turning to you for movie recommendations and why shouldn’t they? You’re smart enough to know Netflix is essential for any film buff.

Netflix is so much more than a streaming website: it has become an integral part of college students’ lives. So let’s call it what it is and give thanks to Netflix for being the best thing to ever happen to us.
