Last Minute Halloween Costumes for College Students

By Emily Wasson on October 31, 2014

Happy Halloween…?

College students typically find that this is the time of the semester that they usually spend hiding away in the library. Midterm exams crept up on us all, and now we are wasting away in our textbooks, cramming for tests that we should have started studying for weeks ago. There is only so much time in a day, and some days seem to be over before you can recognize that they even started. The adult life as a college student is not as glamorous as everyone used to make it sound, but have no fear; that can change right now.

We have become so caught up in school that we have forgotten about the ultimate test we will be taking this week: The test in creativity for the best costumes for this weekend’s Halloween festivities.

However, as college students, we cannot afford to spend money on designer costumes or have the time to construct these elaborate creations. Thus, we must resort to what we have, what we can borrow and what we will ever-so-craftily reinvent to make this year’s Halloween costume better than last year’s.

One of the most important tips to remember on Halloween is that you need to fully commit to the costume you decide to wear. That way, everyone will think that you spend much more time on your outfit than you really did. In order to save some time in the actual costume selection process, I have highlighted a few costumes ideas that could be used for those of us that wait until last minute to dress up on Halloween.

Themed costumes always seem to be among the easiest to pull off, especially if you are going as a group. You can dress up as different decades and wear apparel that best suits that decade’s style. Holiday-themed costumes are also easy and affordable. This time of year, larger franchises have decorations available for all different holidays. Utilize the sale items to your advantage. If you are looking to dress as one of the spring or summer holidays, craft stores typically sell items in the clearance section that could be used for this occasion.

You can never go wrong dressing up as a character from one of your favorite cartoons or video games. For example, you could buy some Halloween candy and hot glue or safety pin pieces onto an old t-shirt to go as the popular phone game Candy Crush. That way, you will still get to enjoy candy on Halloween, without actually trick-or-treating. If you are not feeling particularly crafty, wear your pajamas and find some sort of red towel or blanket to use as a cape to go as Pajama Sam.

Utilize the characters that best represented your childhood. This may be one of the last times in your life that you could dress up as a character from your favorite Disney or Pixar movie. Get creative with your outfit. Find face paint to recreate a specific animal character or use markers to draw logos on your clothing to show others the look you were going for. For example, use paint to draw a giant eye in the center of your forehead and decorate a green shirt with the Monster’s Inc. logo on it to show everyone that you are Mike Wazowski.

Most of the characters in these films, books or video games actually have very simple outfits. You just have to find the distinguishing characteristic that the character portrays in order to best represent them in your costume.  If these ideas do not work for you, you can always resort to the classic bed-sheet ghost or toilet paper mummy.

That being said, Halloween may be the only night this year that you will get to be someone else other than that exhausted college student stressed out in the library. Make the most of it, and Happy Halloween!
