United State Of Pop: Mashup of Top Songs of 2014

By Kate Mueller on December 11, 2014

Iggy Azalea, Jason Derulo and Taylor Swift have been dominating the charts for the last few months and their impact was quite clear in DJ Earworm’s annual pop music mashup, “Do What You Wanna Do.”

Did your favorite song make the cut? Take a look here:

So what were the best songs of 2014? That’s tough to decide. Between being overplayed on the radio and such similar songs from different artists, everything started getting annoying. That’s how pop music is though.

Sometimes you’ll get lucky and really love that your favorite song is playing on the radio so much.

Other times, you find yourself just turning off your car radio because every station is playing the exact same song.

Then there’s the worst situation: when you’re out with friends and the most annoying song comes on, but the radio has brainwashed you into singing and dancing to the entire song.

Let’s see how DJ Earworm did. No matter what your feelings are now, Billboard has these as the top 10 pop songs of 2014.

10. Stay With Me – Sam Smith

Sam made a cameo and had snippets of his songs included, but not nearly as much as we would have liked. There are few people that would deny “Stay With Me” a spot on their favorite song of 2014 list.

Between the gospel chorus and his sad, yet honest, lyrics, it was hard not to relate to. Maybe it was a little too sad for this year’s mashup, so we will give DJ Earworm a pass.

9. Problem – Arianna Grande

Again, another cameo. Jessie J’s “Bang Bang” featuring Grande and Nicki Minaj seemed to be more prevalent in the mashup. Either way, most people are on a hate it or love it situation with Arianna Grande – personally, I was glad she didn’t gain too much attention for the yearly mashup.

8. All About That Bass – Meghan Trainor

While the song has become a little overplayed, it’s great to see it on the mashup for several reasons: its message and its playful, upbeat tempo. Whether you’re driving in the car or are in the shower, you can’t help but to sing and dance – and be proud of those curves your momma gave ya.

7. Rude – MAGIC!

I’m pretty sure everyone is thankful that this song barely made the mashup. If you got distracted then you probably missed it in the mashup. While very, very, very catchy …this song doesn’t really deserve much of a spotlight as far as this year’s top songs.

6. Talk Dirty – Jason Derulo

I’m thinking this was one of DJ Earworm’s favorite songs this year, what do you think? It was throughout the entire song – even the video. I don’t blame him though, everyone loves to “get jazzy” to that song so it was a good way to keep the mashup upbeat and danceable.

5. Counting Stars – One Republic

I didn’t spot this song at all in the mashup. Whether DJ Earworm didn’t think it fit as one of the top songs of 2014 or if it didn’t fit stylistically, we’ll never know, but it definitely deserved its spot here on Billboard. Then again, the song was actually released in 2013 so that could be a big factor.

4. Fancy – Iggy Azalea

*Facepalm* Why? Why did this song become the anthem of 2014? It’s the true definition of a pop song (not rap, sorry Iggy). It’s catchy, but an annoying catchy. It’s disappointing to see it in the mashup as much as it is.

Luckily, “Black Widow” is a little better and that also made the mashup, so we’ll give DJ Earworm a pass since Iggy is clearly his #WCW.

3. All of Me – John Legend

Pretty sure everyone decided that when they get married, this will be their song – even those that are very, very single at the moment. How could you not love John Legend singing about and to his new wife Chrissy Teigen?

However, as much as we, and by we I mean I, love this song, I’m not sure that it should have been featured as prominently in the mashup, especially since he had to speed up the tempo. It ended up sounding kind of weird. But we love the song, so it definitely deserved its time to shine in the 2014 pop mashup.

2. Dark Horse – Katy Perry ft. Juicy J

OK, clearly we SAW a lot of Katy Perry in the video, but did we hear her? Not really. Apparently, the only good part of “Dark Horse” was the “there’s no going back” part of the chorus. We did hear a little Juicy J, but I think the song deserved a little more of a spotlight. After all, it was the number 2 pop song on the charts.

1. Happy – Pharrell

This one’s a tough one. Of course it was going to be in the mashup – it’s the No. 1 song on the Billboard. But, it was popular closer to the beginning of 2014, so by the time DJ Earmworm was working on the mashup, it was probably a little played out. So he did pretty well on incorporating the song, yet not making it annoying.

OK now for the elephant in the room that I’ve yet to address. The song is not even one of the top 10 songs of 2014, yet it accounted for (what felt like) nearly half of the mashup: “Shake It Off.”

Either DJ Earworm has a huge crush on Taylor and secretly dances to her music all day, everyday – or he’s a smart man that knows this song is popular NOW and all the Swifties will listen and watch the mashup because she is basically the main attraction.

Although the song has been doing very well the last few weeks, it only made it to spot 13 on Billboard’s Top 100 of 2014.

The title of the mashup is “Do What You Wanna Do” which is a snippet from Maroon 5’s “Animals” (No. 62 on Billboard). It’s a good, upbeat message to convey for 2014, but he could have chosen a better song to represent 2014.

A fan favorite, it was nice to hear a Disney song in the 2014 mashup considering the massive craze that Frozen created. “Let It Go” was short and sweet in the mashup, which we’re thankful for.

As the opening and closing of the mashup, DJ Earworm chose Hozier’s “Take Me To Church” which was probably my favorite part of the mashup. It was a nice, goosebumps-giving intro and outro for 2014’s mashup.

Surprisingly, the song is nowhere on the Billboard Top 100, but we’re glad DJ Earworm recognized its power and included it.

Based on polls, winner of most annoying song(s) of 2014 are:

“Anything by Iggy” which tied with “‘Happy’ was the most annoying, holy sh*t.”

Looks like DJ Earworm’s mashup won’t be going in everyone’s music library. Did your favorite song make the cut?
