Your childhood was great, but those days are long gone, aren’t they? Not quite — just because you may have moved out or grown up doesn’t mean you’re incapable of doing the things you loved as a kid. Some of the greatest joys in life come from reminiscing old times. And it’s easier than you think.

Here are 10 fun things to do in your apartment that you loved doing as a kid.

1. Baking and decorating

One thing I always loved as a kid was sweets. Anything sweet. Bring back your childhood sweet tooth by baking some cookies or making a cake. Cupcakes too! Even better, grab some fun frosting in all colors, some sprinkles, some glitter, and go to town on the decorations. Don’t be afraid to get as obnoxious as possible.

2. Make a card

Whenever you were dutifully waiting for your parents to get home, did you ever make a card for them? Why not try this again as an adult? It doesn’t have to be sloppy and poorly spelled, but it can be just as heartfelt. Maybe a cute message for the one you love or a nice picture for one of your friends. The small sentiment will be sure to brighten their day.

3. Draw something

Much like making cards, I was always drawing as a child (mostly horses). When you’re young, you don’t have any perception of talent so you drew no matter how terrible you were. You may be more self conscious about your artistic abilities now, but it can’t hurt to break out a pen and paper and get doodling. Who cares if you’re not the next da Vinci?

4. Watch animated films/cartoons

One of the most coveted traditions of childhood was the Saturday morning cartoons. You can always find some nostalgia in old shows and movies. Lots of old shows exist on YouTube and Netflix so they’re easy to reconnect with. Watching them as an adult is always a fun experience; sometimes you even catch some jokes you never would have before.

5. Play traditional games

Instead of slaving in front of a computer, wouldn’t you rather have some real competition? Invite some friends over to play classic games like Monopoly or cards. The opportunities are endless: Uno, Go Fish, Snap, and more. Things might get heated, but then you’ll die laughing over how ridiculous your arguments over a game are. You’re all just there to have fun.

6. Play dress up

As a kid, your future is limitless. You can be anything you want to be. Part of this imagination was emulated through dressing up. You could be a fairy, a firefighter, a rancher, and anything else you could dream up. Look around your apartment for everyday objects that could be a costume, like a bowl as an astronaut’s helmet. You’ll have a blast dreaming up personas you had lost so long ago.

7. Dance

Inhibitions virtually don’t exist in children. If there’s funky music on, they’ll dance to it. Put on some tunes, whether classic or contemporary, and move some furniture to create some space. Jump and dance around, lip syncing and belting out lyrics. Who cares if you look ridiculous, your younger self wouldn’t!

8. Play with your food

As adults, we’re pressured to be health conscious. Let these restrictions go out the window for a day. Indulge in all your favorite childhood meals like mac ‘n cheese, hot dogs, and whatever else you loved. For dessert, create the most lavish sundae you’ve had in a long time, adorned with chocolate and candy, sprinkles and caramel. Let yourself loose from the guilt you give yourself and just enjoy the food.

9. Create your own world

As a kid, your imagination wasn’t limited to the real world. Allow yourself to be king or queen for a day. Think up a new kingdom of which you rule, or a country you rule over. Invent the landscape of your town by creating a map. What do your citizens do for fun? What laws would you enact? You could even create a new language. Anything goes in your kingdom; you are the boss after all.

10. Build a blanket fort

Ahh, the infamous blanket fort. Didn’t you love ripping off cushions from couches, snatching up pillows and blankets, and constructing chairs into the best hideout ever created? The blanket fort doesn’t have to crumble just because you’re an adult. Invite some friends to help and once you’ve made your secret getaway, spend the whole day inside, laughing, telling stories, watching movies on the laptop. Nothing beats just hanging out in a space that’s completely your own.

Sounds fun, right? Being an adult doesn’t mean just doing your taxes and complaining about the weather. The gleam of childhood fun didn’t just disappear once you turned 18. These fun ways to go back to those times are all cheap, easy, and totally more fun than paying your bills (which you can always do tomorrow).
