Capital Coffee: Your Local Guide to the City’s Best Java Joints
Put down the Starbucks –it finally happened. Tallahassee’s got itself a flourishing coffee scene.
More than hipster holes or corporate mongers, these locally owned businesses create safe and inviting spaces for community gathering. College kids, out-of-towners, young professionals, and seasoned workers –you’ll find all of these and more chatting around a table or clacking away on laptops. And the coffee. Roasted and loved to frothed perfection, quality coffee is what these companies strive for.
Sure, we’re getting into the warmer months. But with so many cool options to get locally caffeinated, you might as well take advantage. Here’s your guide to navigating the best in town.
Lucky Goat Coffee. Believe the hype. A tasting room, distribution services, and a roastery right on site –this coffee company has it all. Famous for their cold brew (Tallyccino anyone?), Lucky Goat’s sleek setting is perfect for families, professionals, and college students alike. Plus, you can always take some home with a growler. 668 Capital Circle NE.
Black Dog Café. If the opening of the second Black Dog in Railroad Square is not enough reason to skip out on Starbucks, I don’t know what is. Locally owned and loved, this java gem is as quirky as it is delicious. Poetry readings and jazz music are offered during some evenings, the perfect pairing to a London Fog. 229 Lake Ella Dr. | Railroad Square Art Park, 602 McDonnell Dr.
Red Eye. Now this is coffee you can feel good about. Nestled in the bustling business of Manor at Midtown, Red Eye supports global outreach efforts through your local purchases. A studying oasis for students, this place is focus central. But you can always get down to local music on certain evenings. 1122 Thomasville Rd.
Catalina Café. Though slightly new to the game, the brew is strong in this one. Not only is their coffee great (and roasted in-house, might I add), it pairs excellently with one of their signature sandwiches or baked treats. With four locations, including one below The Edison at Cascades Park, there’s no excuse to miss out. 1208 Capital Circle | 114 All Saints Street | 603 W. Gaines St. | Cascades Park
Iced or steaming, black or sugared up, in a ceramic mug or Styrofoam cup, or however you take it –there’s just something about coffee that brings us all together. So grab a friend. The conversations await.
