6 Songs That Should Be On Your Summer Soundtrack

By Catherine Muscaro on June 8, 2016

Another year has come and gone, and we can now spend our next three months worry-free. Summer is in full swing. It’s time to roll the windows down, turn the radio up, and hit the beach for some surf and sand. Along with sunshine and good vibes, a must-have for summer fun is a new playlist with all the best music. But what songs belong on your summer soundtrack — and which ones are off the list?

Whether you’re getting ready for a night out or just cruising in your car, these top songs of 2016 will be sure to keep your summer hot and your nights cool.

Honorable mentions:

Piece by Piece (Kelly Clarkson) – While I’m a lover of all things KC (and while this song is amazing), it’s a little slow and sad for summer. It can be a bit of a downer on your mood.

Sad Song (Mike Posner) – This song has a great beat and is a strong comeback from the man behind the pop song people forgot. Again, though, it’s a bit of a buzzkill when you listen to the lyrics.

Dangerous Woman (Ariana Grande) — Sorry, Ari. Your voice is stellar and the song is sultry Saturday night seduction set to music. However, it didn’t quite feel like a “summer playlist” song to me. (But don’t worry, it’s still on my Top 25 playlist).

Don’t hesitate to add the honorables to your list. Just be sure these next six end up on your summer soundtrack:

6.) Cake by the Ocean (DNCE) – This song is energetic, upbeat, and even has “ocean” in its title. How could it not make the list? (Joe Jonas being the front man may or may not have had an effect, also). The only downside to the song are the somewhat pointless lyrics. I mean, who eats cake by the ocean? Melted frosting is a definite no-go.

5.) Wild Things (Alessia Cara) – The song has a driven yet subtle beat. Plus Alessia Cara’s voice is gorgeous, and the intro to the video is pretty powerful. (I highly recommend downloading the MP3 version with this intro included). Laid-back beat + solid message = perfect kickback-at-the-beach song.

4.) Don’t Let Me Down (Chainsmokers) – I. cannot. get. over. this. beat. It’s perfect to nod along to in the verses, builds flawlessly to the chorus, backs off at just the right time in the bridge, and then really brings it home. (Daya’s voice is also crazy cool, in my opinion). I could listen to this all day.

3.) Just Like Fire (Pink) – Pink is probably the most-talented pop artist still performing and recording today. This song here is just another job well done: great lyrics, fun beat, phenomenal acrobatics (seriously, that’s impressive!) and it’s for Alice Through the Looking Glass. The only major downside to this song was the rap, bumping it back to #3.

2.) My House (Flo Rida) – This one is a chill, easygoing, hand-out-the-window, radio blasting kinda song. It’s more appropriate than pretty much any other Flo Rida song, too. (Which is good if you’re forced to drag your younger siblings around). I also dig the fact that it’s encouraging a kickback at home or backyard bonfire with close friends. What better way to spend summer?

1.) Can’t Stop This Feeling (Justin Timberlake) – It’s JT, the master of creating the perfect summer hit to jam out to in the car. He’s got a killer voice and this song (as with anything by Timberlake) has extremely catchy lyrics. And we can’t forget his inability to be anything other than adorable. Oh, and not to mention the fact that this song is even better on repeat because of its lax feel. Need I say more?
