10 Things To Clean In Your Apartment Before School Starts

By Jessi Stickel on July 22, 2016

During the craziness of the semester, it is difficult to keep up with the deep cleaning of your college apartment. Now that it is summer and students have less stress on their plates, they can get their apartment clean and ready to take on the upcoming fall semester.

Here are 10 things in your apartment that you should clean before school starts.

1. Comforter & blankets

It is usual to wash your sheets frequently during the semester, but when is the last time you washed your bed comforter and/or blankets? These can trap a lot of dust and germs when they are not washed, so throw them in the wash when you are getting your other cleaning done around the apartment. This way you can feel comfortable in bed knowing that it is clean.

2. Rugs

Bathroom and kitchen rugs can get pretty disgusting over the semester. Between germs and dropped food, rugs are bound to need a good cleaning every now and then. With most rugs you can easily put them in the washer and dryer, making cleaning them hassle free. They will also come out looking much better, and sometimes even look brand new.

3. Shower curtain

Depending on what type of curtain you have, shower curtains can get scum or mold on them, which not only looks bad, but is unhealthy for you and your roommates as well. When they get dirty like this, you can scrub and scrub and feel like you are just getting nowhere. This is another thing you can easily throw in the washer and it will most likely come clean of any grime or mold.

4. Toilet

You probably clean your toilet bowl somewhat often during the semester, but how often do you wipe down the whole toilet? Germs are not just in the toilet bowl, the seat and base of the toilet also carry a lot of germs. Along with cleaning the bowl you should also wipe down all surfaces of the toilet with anti-bacterial wipes.

5. Tub/shower

Your apartment tub and shower can also get grime on it from the water, soap and hair products you use. Depending on how dirty your tub is, cleaning it can be quite a task. Using bleach and other bath cleaning products to scrub the tub will get it clean and get rid of any germs. This is definitely a cleaning task that you won’t feel like doing when you are worrying about your classes and homework, so it is best to get it done over the summer and be worry-free of having a clean tub.

6. Trash cans

The trash cans in your bathroom, bedroom and kitchen can get pretty nasty after a while. With small plastic trash cans, you can easily wash them out in the tub; with other trash cans, such as in your kitchen, you can just wipe them down with anti-bacterial wipes to clean off any food or germs.

7. Refrigerator

The fridge is not something you necessarily think of when you start cleaning your apartment, which is why you should clean it before school starts again. You should go through all of the food and condiments in your fridge and make sure nothing has expired or will not be eaten before it goes bad. After you make room from cleaning out the food, you can wipe down everything, including shelves and drawers with a warm rag. You can also try to organize it if it is normally a mess. This may help keep it clean and neat all semester.

8. Microwave

Most college students use the microwave quite often during the semester, which means it is probably a mess with food stuck to the walls. It always seems like such a hassle to clean the microwave since the food is basically plastered on; however, there is a much easier way to clean it.

Put one cup of vinegar and one cup of hot water into a microwavable bowl and set the microwave for 5-10 minutes. The mixture will evaporate and loosen the food on the walls, making it come off by simply wiping with a sponge or rag. (Make sure you remove the bowl with an oven mitt before cleaning.)

9. Stove & oven

Your stovetop and oven can get food build-up on them as well. You can use oven cleaner to wipe out the whole oven. Depending on what type of stovetop you have you can purchase cleaner for that as well.

10. Floors

Floors are difficult to clean in your apartment during the semester since people are constantly going in and out of the apartment. If you are doing most of this cleaning in one day, you should leave your floors for last or when your roommates plan to be gone most of the day. Moping all of the hard floors and vacuuming the carpet will make your apartment look neat and clean for the new semester.
