Everything is just so exciting and nerve wracking when you’re an incoming freshman. There are so many mixed emotions involved with going to college. You’re leaving home and finally living on your own. How awesome is that?

One of the things that I was most excited about was decorating my dorm. I would go on Pinterest and look up dorm room pictures. I would buy fairy lights and cute posters. But when I actually began to live in the dorm, I realized that I needed many more items than cute decorations.

Here are some tips that I hope you incoming freshman will learn and grasp.

Command Strips

Definitely invest in command strips. They’re easy to place on the wall and very easy to remove. The reason why you should get these is because it allows you to have more space in your room. Remember that your dorm room probably is smaller than you think. Command strips serve to hold things such as towels, bags, coats and so much more!

Shower Shoes

No matter how clean your bathroom may look, wear shower shoes. There are so many germs that you’re going to be exposed to. You should take precautions to prevent those germs from getting to you. The most sanitary thing you could do is wear shower shoes while in the bathroom.  Chances are that you will be sharing a bathroom with others. Not wearing shower shoes could possibly result in Athlete’s foot. So please invest in shower shoes.

Mattress Pad

Many dorm mattresses are hard and annoying. Some people, including myself, don’t bother to buy mattress pads because its not something that most people do anyways. Think about it, your bed at home is probably comfortable enough for you not to have a mattress pad. I didn’t think much about a mattress pad when I moved into my dorm. I noticed that without a mattress pad, I was waking up way earlier and I had pain around my body. Buying a mattress pad made a huge difference and allowed me to get the sleep that I deserved.

Combination Lock

I trusted my roommate and suitemates, but I still kept a combination lock. I kept valuables there such as important paperwork, my watch, iPad, and even extra cash. Sometimes your roommate and suitemates might invite people over while you’re gone. In order to not be paranoid that you won’t find your valuables when you get back, keep a lock on a drawer.

Plastic

Plastic will be your best friend when it comes to making quick meals in the dorm. I had plastic cups, plates, utensils, and even bowls when I lived in my dorm. Whenever you make something, you could easily dispose of the plates and utensils you use. Instead of washing every plate you use, you could just throw it away right after. It saves you so much time!
