Cap City Video Lounge: Film Festivities for the Strange

By Trevor Durham on January 6, 2017

Cap City Video Lounge is the newest in a line of unique Tallahassee openings, with just a birth date of two weeks prior to this article. The Lounge is perhaps one of Tallahassee’s freshest businesses, a small movie house that doubles as film rental, with a twist. Cap City is a store for the cultish, the strange, the ‘Trash’ film fanatics. Cap City presents Tallahassee not only with phenomenal film marathons of the unique variety, but with an affordable rental selection that die-hard film buffs will tear up for.

The Video Lounge boasts both an entry-way rental store and a 47-seat theater with an excellent sound system. The rental store is cutely decorated, homely without being tacky, and sorted into hilarious sections such as ‘Trash’, ‘Criterion’, ‘Awkward’, and even newer selections from 2016. The store is decorated in impressive memorabilia, such as a Tales from the Crypt life size figure, vintage posters, and a full snack bar (soon to sell beer and wine, I’m told). The owners own collections are for display on the shelves, from Troma hard-to-find classics as (a personal favorite) Cannibal the Musical, the entire Wes Anderson collection, and the Daria box set. There isn’t an obscure film you won’t find on the shelves, be it Samurai Cop or Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter.

Want to see South Park creators’ first project? Cap City Video Lounge has you.

The event of the visiting night was a marathon of the original Evil Dead trilogy, a set of classics that truly set the stage for this shop. While entry to the film showings is free, donations are accepted if not encourage. “We depend on the kindness of others” the owner told me. And they do- while the clientele seemed to be friendly familiars, a homely feel after a mere two weeks, the store is still only able to take cash (soon to be fixed). The place rents out most DVDs/Blu-Rays for a $2/3 day rate, $3 for select few, and they depend on the business of walk-ins.

The Fantomas Theatre is a cozy, yet well-spaced out theater that is more welcoming than the SLC’s Phantom counterpart. The Video Lounge plans to host films nightly, starting around 6pm every evening, with themes on the weekend. Fridays will be ‘Fright Fridays’, such as this evening’s Evil Dead spree, Saturday will host early matinees- the 7th will be a screening of classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle cartoons for the young ones. Coming up this 13th will be a well-planned out marathon of the original Friday the 13th films. Keep your eyes peeled on their calendar, check their Facebook on the regular.

No matter the night, take yourself down to 2790-2 West Tennessee St. to find yourself in the hole-in-the-wall honesty that most of Gaines St. lacks. Cap City Video Lounge is a soulful shop, pouring the owners collection into the hands of any willing to accept. Rentals are cheap, the popcorn variety is superb, and their VIP discounts make returns a given.

If you’d like to rent out the theater, prices generally range around $1 per minute. You can contact the Video Lounge on Facebook are at 850-765-0147.
