The Lego Batman Movie: A Geeky Masterpiece
I am a comic book geek. While in my adulthood I do prefer Marvel, I very much grew up reading DC Comics.
And, even if I’ve sat down with my friends and debated who would win in a money fight, Iron Man or Batman (and the answer is neither; Black Panther beats them both because of his royal status, ha!), that doesn’t mean that I’m not an adult. Moreover, there is nothing wrong with being a kid at heart.
Which is more of why my man and I decided to check out “The Lego Batman Movie” on Valentine’s Day. Sure, there might be more couples out there checking out literally any other movie and even the 50 Shades of Grey sequel movie, but we didn’t want to see a movie that promotes partner violence.
So, we chose “The Lego Batman Movie,” more because we’re comic book geeks, as well as kids at heart.
Anyway, Will Arnett was voicing Batman and that alone had me excited. Arnett also voiced Batman’s Lego form in “The Lego Movie.”
The star-studded cast also included Zach Galifianakis as The Joker, Michael Cera as Robin (aka Richard ‘Dick’ Grayson), and Rosario Dawson as Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl.
While the Dick Grayson in the role seemed a bit younger than other incarnations of the character, Cera did a wonderful job bringing this curious little orphan to life.
Now, many people are familiar with Batgirl/Barbara Gordon from Batman: The Animated Series and, with Tara Strong voicing her. Don’t get me wrong, I think Tara Strong is a wonderful voice actress, but I absolutely loved Rosario Dawson’s take on the role of ‘Babs,’ that’s Batgirl/Barbara’s nickname. Dawson very much embodied Babs’ no-nonsense personality and I would love to see her lend the voice to the character in more animated adventures, Lego-based or not.
Speaking of voices, it needs to be said: Will Arnett as Batsy is definitely up there in the ‘Best Batman voice’ category and Zach Galifianakis’ Joker definitely falls into the category of best on-screen Joker (animated or not). Their portrayal of the hero and villain were flawless, but I think the ’90s baby in me will always prefer Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill in those roles; the pair originally played those roles on Batman: The Animated Series.
Before I get into any spoilers, I have to acknowledge the animation in the movie. Sure, CGI is pretty common to see nowadays, but this animation was really easy on the eyes and as a kid at heart with horrible eyesight and the tendency to find certain animation too bright be it in my glasses or contacts, I was loving the look of the entire movie.
*WARNING: SPOILERS (while minimal) AHEAD*
This partially a spoiler for “The Lego Movie” as well as “The Lego Batman Movie” because Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill make quick cameos reprising their roles as Lego Superman and Lego Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), respectively.
I won’t spend too much time getting into how those cameos went, but I will say that The Justice League was involved. Now, to exclude Batman from The Justice League is just wrong.
Sure, I understand that the movie was getting at the fact that Batman is a really huge loner but even in the recently rebooted New 52 Comics, Batman is still responsible for bringing the Justice League together.
Also, it is worth mentioning that this Batman-universe depicted Harley Quinn and The Joker without their abusive relationship; they’re just in a relationship. There was no glorifying of their abusive love affair the way the live-action Suicide Squad movie did to the relationship, and I very much appreciated that. It’s fair to say that Lego Joker and Lego Harley Quinn are #RelationshipGoals despite their other incarnations being the furthest from that.
Without giving too much more away, there are plenty of nods to previous Batman franchises and whether you’re a die-hard fan like me or even a casual fan, those jokes will be greatly appreciated.
Speaking of jokes, what really made the movie for me was the adult jokes that were slipped in and went right over the heads of the little kids. My favorite joke in the movie, while I would love to share it, is beautifully delivered and I can’t possibly give it all away. Though, I will mention that the joke had to do with the double-meaning of Robin’s nickname when he’s not in ‘super form.’
I would rate this movie 10/10 Batarangs, and all Batman fans should really check it out.
