Pros and Cons of Changing Your Hairstyle

By Andrea Loaiza on March 15, 2017

There are two types of people in the world: the ones who have had the same haircut since they were 6 years old, and the ones who change their hairstyle so frequently that if they see a celebrity with a new hair color they would want to try it just because.

The moment you change your hairstyle for the first time is usually a big deal. Even though I loved my long hair, I got bored with the same look in my high school years. I tried bangs and layers just to keep it interesting.

However, I wanted to do something more drastic after graduation. It was the end of an era and the fact that my high school wouldn’t allow me to dye my hair made it really exciting for me to try it. I ended up dying it just a little bit lighter than I already had, but it made me feel like a new person. I’ve always tried the same hair color since that day, but the fact that I’ve done it somehow makes me feel more powerful.

Even if you don’t want to accept it, changing your hairstyle is a big deal. Deciding to dye it blue or shave half of your head says a lot about your personality. One of my favorite things is to see people with unusual hairstyles; it makes me think that they are fearless and interesting. It doesn’t matter if you don’t want to accept it, but the way you portray yourself physically can say a lot about you.

So … in order to decide how you want to be seen, you have to carefully chose your next step.

BANGS

Pros

•Bangs can look really awesome. Have you seen Zooey Deschanel??? She looks so cute and adorable. They can accentuate some facial features for good.

•You can decide how to wear your bangs — either straight or move it aside. They are versatile. You can have a different hairstyle depending on the event.

•They can cover up pimples on your forehead. I used to do that a lot when I had my bangs and they were really helpful before puberty hit.

Cons

•You have to be really explicit to the hair stylist on how long you want your bangs. You can end up having a bang that only covers one centimeter of your forehead if you are not careful enough.

•If you are not consistent with it, it may grow within a few months and you will just loose it. Having long and straight bangs can be a pain in the eyes … literally.

•Living in a place where it’s usually hot and humid can make having a bang really stressful. Maintaining them the way you like it can be time-consuming.

CUTTING YOUR HAIR SHORT

Pros

•Short hair may let you look more sophisticated.

•Short hair is usually way easier to take care of. Do you spend lots and lots of money on shampoo and conditioner? Not anymore!

•Short hairstyles are really popular nowadays. It’s a trendy hairstyle!

Cons

•Short hair may limit your options. It will be almost impossible to braid it, tie it or do much with it. Of course, it also depends on how short you want to cut it.

•You may feel really weird at the beginning. If you have never had short hair before, I’ll recommend you to cut it little by little until you feel comfortable enough. ALSO, make sure to choose a hairstyle according to the shape of your face.

CUTTING YOUR HAIR IN LAYERS

Pros

•It’s a subtle way to change your hairstyle and a good way to start if you have never changed it before. You can maintain the same length while having a new look.

•Layers can add volume and body to your hair. If you are the type of person who usually cuts her hair straight, this is a good way to change your hairstyle without having to give up on much.

Cons

•As with short hair, it is difficult to do much with your hair covered in layers. Braids look like a mess. Tidying your hair requires too many bobby pins.

•If you don’t have naturally straight hair, layers may bring too much volume in your life. However, if you are not looking for volume, you can have small layers.

DYEING YOUR HAIR

Pros

•You can try ombre or balayage before dyeing everything, and it would still be a completely different hairstyle.

•If you are a brunette, you may feel more comfortable as a blonde than as a brunette, or vice versa.

•Trying colors out from the ordinary palette (pink, blue, red, gray) can make you look more adventurous. It’ll make you feel like a completely different person.

Cons

•Dyeing your hair can be expensive. First of all, you may do it for the first time in a hair salon, so that would probably be expensive. Overall, you may want to maintain the color. If you don’t want your full blonde hair to become a balayage, then you will have to constantly go to retouch it.

•The color you had may not be the color you wanted at the beginning.

•Bleaching and maintaining the color can damage your hair if you do it constantly.

•You should try to keep in mind the color of your skin, to make sure it fits. However, if you love a color and you want to try it, then GO AHEAD!

OTHER WAYS TO CHANGE YOUR HAIRSTYLE

•You can always change the texture of your hair. If you usually have it straight, then try to curl it some days. You can also do it vice versa.

•You can try to braid it sometimes. There are many different braids you could try, and they usually look beautiful!

•You can try to change the color with Crayolas. They don’t last long and you could also test a color for future reference.

•Try to do overnight tutorials. They don’t use heat, which will prevent your hair from damaging, and it would be different.
