My Roommate Success Story
Should I do random roommate assignment? I asked myself the same question.
As my senior year of high school drew to a close, I began to look forward to college. Most of my senior classmates were finding their future roommates on Facebook. However, I never mustered the motivation to search out a roommate, maybe because of my busy schedule, my dislike of Facebook, or simple laziness. In the end, I grudgingly decided to choose random roommate assignment.
Looking back, this was an incredibly risky decision. Since starting college, I have heard an equal number of roommate horror and success stories. I am able to contribute to both narratives, but now I am here to share my success story.
Meeting my new roommate was awkward. I knew I had to live with this person, but I barely knew her. We had only briefly texted over the summer, and we both put on polite facades at our first meeting. My roommate and I have since discussed our first impressions of each other: we both thought the other was nice but assumed we would not be close friends. Thankfully, we were wrong.
If I had to pinpoint the moment we became friends, it would be the evening after move-in day. That night, we were discussing where to eat dinner, and I happened to mention my relief that there were plenty of vegetarian options at the dining halls. “You are a vegetarian too?” my roommate exclaimed.
Since that one realization, my roommate and I have been inseparable. More often than we’d care to admit, we find ourselves talking in the dining hall for hours at a time, too engrossed in our conversation to return to our apartment. We are in a yoga class together, and after every session, we have a standing lunch date at Nekter. The day we return from each break, we inevitably stay up late into the night sharing all the details from the time we spent apart. And if one of us is happy, the other can’t help but feel the same.
My roommate and I live in a four-person apartment and our other two roommates are, let’s say, “problematic.” Nevertheless, even on the worst days, I do not regret my roommate situation. I realize that if I had not chosen completely random, I would not be living with my best friend roommate.
My goal with this article is not to persuade readers to follow in my footsteps; rather I wanted to express that roommate success stories do exist. College would not be the same without my best friend roommate, and I am thankful every day that I blindly selected “random assignment.” If you feel apprehensive about going random, I encourage you to keep an open mind. Sometimes the most random decisions can turn into the best ones.
