Skinnytaste: The Easy Guide to Delicious Low Fat Cooking

If there’s one thing that scared me most about going to college, it was gaining the Freshman 15. Not just during freshman year, but every year I went off on my own to school. With meal swipes, unlimited access to fast food delivery, and no access to a kitchen for both my freshman and sophomore years, I found it somewhat difficult to maintain a healthy diet. Even when I began living in my own apartment, I still felt like I was too busy to start cooking healthy meals on my own.

Four hours later on Pinterest, I found Skinnytaste. Skinnytaste.com is a blog dedicated to creating delicious low fat recipes that are not only easy to make but healthy for you too.

The site was first created in 2008 by Gina Homolka, who wanted to combine her two passions of great food and beautiful photography. Every week she features low-fat, delicious, healthy, family-friendly recipes, answers cooking and nutritional questions, provides health tips, and sponsors giveaways.

The whole philosophy behind Skinnytaste is to feature seasonal, clean, whole foods while still maintaining good portion control. The recipes on Skinnytaste must be both “skinny” and “tasty,” and they don’t sacrifice the flavor found in their full-fat portions. It’s no wonder that this unique take on food has attracted over 2.5 million visitors on a monthly basis.

So for those of us living on our own, independent from meal swipes and too poor to buy food every day, this is such a fantastic alternative to daily meals. I have already started making some of the recipes and currently my favorites are the Baked Chicken with Dijon and Lime and the Cilantro Lime Shrimp. Here’s to cooking healthy meals and beating the college weight gain myths!
