3 Ways To Organize Your Storage Unit The Right Way

By Sarah Christine Davis on December 23, 2015

Storage units, as wonderful and helpful as they are, are often more of a painful experience than they have to be. It’s easy to simply toss everything in and be done with it — until you need something in a few months and have no idea where to start.

However, it doesn’t have to be that way. There are plenty of tips and tricks that you can have up your sleeve when it comes to creating an organization system for your storage unit.

While redoing your already-stuffed storage unit may seem like a strong task to tackle, it will be worth it when what you’re looking for takes a mere minute to locate.

On the other hand, if you’re putting things away in your storage unit for the first time, creating an organization system now will ensure easy roads ahead when you have to locate things.

Whatever the case, having an organized storage unit makes future moves much easier.

If you have a storage unit or are getting one soon, be sure to check out the following tips to remember when you’re creating an organization system for your storage unit!

1. Storage unit size is important.

According to MooveIn.com, step one in organizing your things in your unit is to be sure that you’ve chosen the best unit size for your needs. It’s better to overshoot than undershoot when it comes to space; after all, it’s better to have a little extra wiggle room than to not have everything be able to fit.

A good way to be sure that you have the right size is to visualize all of your things in there. If you follow these tips, everything will be organized in a space-saving manner, but still keep in mind that too much is better than not enough.

It’s also a good idea to bring along a friend or two who can offer a different opinion. You may have an idea stuck in your head about how your stuff will look in there, but they can offer up scenarios and ideas that you may not have thought about.

2. Organize both your items and your storage unit into sections.

This begins with packing your items. One way to keep your storage unit organized is to pack everything related to each other together. For example, you can pack your boxes according to art supplies, school stuff, entertainment, decorations, etc.

Organize your things into each box thoughtfully — don’t just throw everything in. It’s also important to label each box neatly and in large print so that you can quickly and easily locate what you’re looking for.

Additionally, you can be further organized within each section. For example, for your art supplies section, you can have one small box for painting supplies, another for pastels, and so on. Within your entertainment section, you can have your DVDs organized by genre so that they’re easy to locate and your board games organized alphabetically.

Furthermore, you can organize your storage unit into sections. Once you have all of your art supplies boxes, put them all in the same place in your storage unit. This will make your storage unit even more organized and speed up the process of finding what you’re looking for.

3. Create a moving plan.

It’s important to create a plan for how you will move things in and where things will go. While it’s great to have everything organized into sections, it’s also imperative to have things put in the most ideal place in your storage unit.

Consider which items you may need to access more often, and place those towards the front. Additionally, put larger items such as appliances and furniture towards the back so that they’re out of your way and because you probably won’t suddenly need them.

You can also place some items atop furniture to save space, but this may cause damage to the item. Be sure to consider the fact that placing something on top of a mattress may damage the springs and placing something on top of a couch may result in a dent.

For softer furniture such as couches and mattresses, it’s smart to buy protective covers. This not only protects from damage that may occur from placing items on top of them, but also protects them from dust and other forms of nature that may pop up.
