Find A Job With These 3 Resources

By Danielle Wirsansky on March 25, 2016

Whether you are looking for a job while you are still in school or are starting to look for a job for post-graduation life, it can be a difficult process. Face it, job hunting is just hard. It is almost never easy or simple.

Sometimes, just knowing where to start and beginning to look can be the most difficult parts of your job search. So here are three resources you can use to try and find a job!

Your School’s Career Center & Affiliated Sources

Most colleges have some kind of career center that can help you. Many offer resume checking and mock interview services as well as career advising that can help you figure out what you want to do and what you need to do in order to have that dream career. They can help you put the finishing touches on the process of landing a job. But before you can even get to that point, you need to find a job to apply for — and these career centers come in handy for that too.

They often host career fairs or even more specific events like part-time job fairs. Part-time jobs can be great for those still college students and also helpful to new graduates trying to ease their way into adult life by holding down a job. Many universities and companies work together so that these organizations can find the best new, fresh employees.

Many career centers also have websites with job postings listed as they are received with all the details you need to see if it might be a job you qualify for or are interested in. Postings like this are usually pretty clear about what they are looking for which makes it easier to see if you might be a good fit. Why waste your time applying for a job you know you are not qualified for? It helps clarify things for you as a job seeker.

Facebook Groups

Another great untapped resource to find jobs can be Facebook groups. Many universities have an entire network of groups that you can only belong to if you have a school affiliated email address. If your school has a network like that, I highly recommend joining because it is more than likely they have a Jobs & Internships group.

People looking for jobs or that know of jobs being offered post there and it can be a great tool for you to utilize. Especially when it’s a school affiliated group, students or graduates from that school that apply will be considered front runners just for that reason. Others can post their opinions too about how it is to work there and other details that you might find beneficial.

If your school does not offer this or you are looking for even more options, most towns and cities have location specific job groups that are open for the public to join as well. They can be as specific as your city or as wide as your state and the groups can differ based on the different kinds of work you are interested in doing. Be sure to read all the rules before applying, but I recommend joining every one that seems like it might fit with your job search. Many more jobs will be offered there than you would have found otherwise.

If you keep your notifications on for such groups, you’ll also get a head start on others interested in applying for these jobs because you will find out about the opportunities sooner!

Craigslist

I know this may be a surprising suggestion and you definitely need to be cautious while using it, but Craigslist can be an awesome resource for finding a job. You can find listings in almost any field and it’s really easy to search and go through them.

You do need to be careful about scams. I would recommend taking personal information like your address off your resume if you apply to any jobs through it. However, once you wade through all the scam postings you can find some pretty neat and unique jobs that you might not have even thought of or dreamed about doing beforehand. Not every city has an active Craigslist site, but you can also use it to check out other locations you might be interested in living in!
