How To Advertise Your Summer Sublet

For a college student, it can seem like there is almost nothing worse than trying to find a summer subtenant. Those pesky property rental companies — they force you to sign a year’s lease knowing perfectly well that you want to return home for the summer and not stay in an empty college town.

However, it is hard to pay for an apartment that you are not even going to be living in for four months while you go home or go off somewhere else for a job. You have got to sublet your apartment to offset the costs, but almost every student looking to go home for the summer is trying to do the same thing.

There are way more apartments that need to be sublet than there are people who want to sublet them. You need to be competitive in order to get your apartment sublet, and the way to do it? By advertising! But how? Read on to learn some of the best ways to advertise your summer sublet.

Bulletin boards

Your best bet is to appeal directly to other students in order to sublet your apartment for the summer. A great way to reach out to them is by making fliers and hanging them up on the bulletin boards around your campus. You should always be very careful before hanging up your posters and make sure that your posting is appropriate and allowed on that board. Otherwise, the school might contact you and you could get in trouble over the posters, which is not worth it.

However, most schools often have many boards scattered across campus that have relatively few rules about what is to be posted. Be sure to hit every bulletin board that you can. Make sure your flier is bright and attractive and lists all the amenities a student could receive if they chose to sublet your apartment. You want to entice them. You should also make sure that your flier is centrally located and in full view of anyone that walks by or checks out the board.

You will probably need to visit and check on the bulletin boards every so often to make sure no one has torn down your flier or covered it up with another one, at least until your apartment is successfully sublet.

Bathroom fliers

Another underrated way to market your apartment for sublet over the summer is to take those same fliers that you posted on bulletin boards and post them in bathroom stalls as well. This may seem like an unorthodox technique, but it can be effective. Some students might walk past a bulletin board without noticing your flier — but stick it in a bathroom stall where they will be face to face with it with nothing to do but scroll on their phones? You might be able to capture these students’ undivided attention, at least for a few minutes.

And perhaps a student, now confronted with your lovely apartment for sublet, might actually consider it or even share the info about your apartment with someone that they know is looking to sublet an apartment for summer. What else is there to do when you are in the bathroom after all?

School-specific Facebook groups

Many universities are jumping onto the social media bandwagon, and many schools have created networks of Facebook pages just for their students. And they are true to their words and strictly monitor and maintain that only the university’s students are members of the groups by only allowing those with university affiliated or sanctioned email addresses to join.

You have to register with that school address and verify it with Facebook before you can join the network. But once you are in, you are in! You can deal with (and market) directly to your prime audience: fellow students! These facebook groups are places that rental properties and other leasing agents cannot access, so you have an advantage over them in marketing directly to other students. There are often even students directly created to connect those looking for places to live and others looking to find someone to take their places. There are even some subpages that are specifically for subleasing!

While sure, you still have to compete against other students attempting to find someone to sublet their own apartment for summer, at least you can take out outside sources that could take away from your own chances to find a subletter.

If you hustle and market hard enough, make attractive and descriptive fliers, are willing to compromise, and are determined, there should be no reason that you cannot successfully find someone to sublet your apartment for summer. And if the going gets tough and it might feel impossible, just remember to bump your post again in the Facebook group.
