How to Establish an Instagram Aesthetic

By Andrea Loaiza on May 3, 2017

Oh, social media aesthetic! Some people love you, others just love to throw hate at you.

To be honest, I didn’t see the importance of a good aesthetic in your social media until I thought about starting a blog, as I just love writing and I thought that having a blog would help me with my writing skills. One of the biggest steps to become a good blogger was to brand yourself, and what a better way to do it than using social media.

Choosing one social media was easy. From my point of view, Facebook is a good place for memes. Twitter is for people who are just naturally funny or sarcastic. Pinterest is to promote your written pieces. Instagram is for the photographers and dreamers. By the title of this article, you probably know which one I selected.

For some people, Instagram aesthetic doesn’t mean anything. If you try to explain to them that you are trying to brand yourself trough social media, they would look at you as a freak. Most people still see social media a place meant for you to post a selfie or group pictures from your spring break vacations.

However, you could be doing exactly that while becoming a personal brand if you wanted. To be honest, you don’t need to be branding yourself to want an Instagram aesthetic. You may try to have an Instagram aesthetic if you want to become a personal brand, just have fun, try something new, or even if you just want to have more followers or look more professional.

Planning your Instagram aesthetic can be more fun than you imagine!

First, discover what type of aesthetic you want to have

Selfies are always cute and nice. However, if you want to make your Instagram a little bit more aesthetically pleasant I would recommend you taking pictures of your daily life. Engage your audience by giving a little insight into your life. You don’t have to be a model or an artist to have a beautiful and aesthetical social media.

•Are you usually at the library? Cute photos of an organized desk are always a plus

•Do you like to cook or are you a foodie? You can take pictures of your meals! You could even give some recipes of your favorite ones as your captions!

•Are you into fashion? The hashtag #OOTD is going to be your best friend.

•Do you love traveling? Your Instagram is going to be full of #tb! You can also take pictures of landscapes and the places you visit.

Having an Instagram theme is not necessary, but recommended

Try to edit your photos similarly. The thing with an aesthetical Instagram is that it looks pleasant and organized. If you have a lot of saturation in a picture, a black and white filter in another one and sepia filter in the next one, your Instagram page won’t look as attractive as you wish it looked.

Instagram is a photo-sharing application that also lets you share boomerangs and videos. This application includes many photo effects including black and white, vintage, sepia, and others. You have probably already played with these filters, but they are not the only ones you can use to make your Instagram aesthetically pleasant.

There are many apps that you can use to edit your pictures, but the ones that I use the most are VSCO cam and Adobe Lightroom.

•The thing that I like the most about VSCO cam is the gorgeous filters it has. You can actually share your edited pictures, but I like to use it as a photo editor. If you don’t know what filter would look the best, I would recommend you go to Pinterest and search for “VSCO filters.”

Another way to choose a filter, or just an aesthetic that you like, is by looking on Instagram pages. There’s an awesome Instagram page called @ibestfilters, which shows you a lot of combinations of photos edited by the VSCO cam and the tools they used to accomplish them.

•Some people also like Adobe Lightroom. I feel that as this one is an app used on the computer, it’s mostly used to edit pictures for blogs. I use Adobe Lightroom to fix the colors of a picture. It doesn’t have the variety of filters that VSCO cam has, but it gives a more professional look.

 3 things to consider

Remember that you must get out of your comfort zone to take a good picture. People will always judge, but if you really want to have an aesthetically pleasing Instagram, you need to shake the negative vibes and start practicing! Bloggers usually recommend you consider these three things:

•Background: It all depends on the kind of picture you are taking. If you want a picture of your own, I’ll recommend you use a simple background or a background with a cute pattern. Choosing either of those makes it easier for you to focus on the real object that you want to show off in your picture.

•Lighting: Natural light will always be helpful. Avoid places with too many shadows. Even though pictures at night while you are going out can be fun, try to take shots in the morning or before sunset for better lighting.

•Perspective: Play with different angles. It’s really boring to see the same kind of pictures over and over again. If you want to take a picture of a flower, search for a different angle than usual, maybe from a low angle.

Plan everything

Plan your schedule of posting pictures and try to be consistent with the time. This is just for you to maintain your motivation. Planning what photos you are going to post will make your life so much easier. You don’t have to be stressed out every day because you need to post a picture. You can easily take good pictures throughout a week and distribute it as you want. This will help you with consistency and organization. If you are organized, your Instagram will also be.
