The Dissertation Fellowship program was first introduced in 2014 and is intended to support doctoral candidates who are writing their dissertations. To qualify for a fellowship, applicants must be an active Phi Kappa Phi member in the dissertation writing stage of doctoral study. All pre-dissertation requirements must be met by the November 30 deadline, including approval of the dissertation proposal.

Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1897 and is the country’s oldest and most discerning collegiate honor society for all academic majors. Each year, it inducts roughly 30,000 students, faculty, and other professional staff, and there are chapters at more than 300 colleges and universities in North America and the Philippines. Membership in Phi Kappa Phi is by invitation only to the top 10 percent of seniors and grad students and the top 7.5 percent of juniors. Faculty, professional staff, and alumni who have accomplished scholarly distinction also qualify for membership.

“The Phi Kappa Phi Dissertation Fellowship fills a unique funding niche by supporting young scientists who are taking steps towards academic independence,” said Anna Joy Rogers, a 2017 Dissertation Fellow. “Substantial grants like the dissertation fellowship — which do not restrict to subject matter — are hard to come by and may not be available in some academic fields. I trust that this award will enable me to make an important contribution to public health through my dissertation.”

The selection process for a dissertation fellowship analyzes how the fellowship will contribute to the completion of the dissertation, the gravity of original research, and approval by the dissertation chair. The recipients chosen will receive $10,000 to apply toward 12 months of dissertation writing. The deadline to submit an application for the Dissertation Fellowship is November 30, 2017, and recipients selected for the fellowships will be notified by March 1, 2018.

The Society’s mission is “to recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others.” In addition to dissertation fellowships, Phi Kappa Phi awards $1.4 million every two years to qualifying students and members through study abroad grants, graduate fellowships, funding for post-baccalaureate development, member and chapter awards, and grants for local, national and international literacy initiatives.
