With the holidays coming up, you are likely hoping to decorate your off-campus house or apartment or your family home. For those who live in an apartment, your options are more limited because you have less space and you do not have the option of adding decorations outdoors. No matter what winter holiday(s) you celebrate, there are plenty of décor items for you to use without breaking your budget and without spending all of your valuable time decorating. If you are decorating your school home, you can still have as much fun with it as you do at home.

Lights, lights, action

For many religions, lights are a huge part of their winter holiday celebrations. If you want to keep things basic and not break the bank, keeping your lighting subtle and simple will help add a festive spirit to your room without overwhelming your space. This is especially good if your space is on the smaller side. You may also consider putting an electric candle in your window for all to see. Also, you can opt to include candles throughout your apartment or house so you can set a calm and relaxing mood. If your space is bigger or you want to go brighter, consider adding some multi-colored lights. You may even opt to have flashing lights to add even more of an effect.

Signs of your faith or celebration of choice

Many winter holidays have some sort of attachment to a faith. Even if you do not consider yourself to be super religious, you may go to religious services for your chosen holiday. If this is the case, incorporate some sort of reminder of your faith into your décor. For those who celebrate Christmas, you may opt to buy a Nativity scene. Those who celebrate Hanukkah will likely have a menorah. These decorations will help you keep a perspective on why you celebrate the holidays you celebrate, which can help you overcome your finals.

Let it snow

If you have a white door on your house or apartment, you can turn it into a snowman on the inside of the apartment. Just be sure that you hang up the decorations in a way that will not damage the door, especially if you are renting. As an alternative, you can turn your white fridge into a snowman. This option is a bit easier since you can use magnets. All you need is construction paper, wrapping paper for the scarf, scissors, tape, and magnets if you are decorating your fridge.

Also, you can make snowflakes to hang from your ceiling. Buy some white paper and arrange a time for you and your roommates to make these snowflakes. For added effect, you can glue some glitter to the snowflakes so they sparkle when they swing. Like with the door snowman, be sure to hang the snowflakes in a way that will not damage the ceiling.

To eliminate the risk of damaging your apartment, you can let the snow in by making snowmen painted wine bottles. Use empty bottles. Spray paint them using white spray paint and paint a face on them using black acrylic paint. You can use as many wine bottles as you can to make them. These can be a fun craft idea to make with friends or roommates.

The stockings were hung…

Whether you have a fireplace or not, nothing is more festive than stockings. There are so many different kinds, from the classic to modern ones and even stockings that have pop culture characters o them. Hang one for each roommate or member of your family. When no one is looking, hide little presents in the stockings. If you hang stockings in your schoolhouse or apartment, have your roommates open their stockings before going home for the winter break. If you are hanging them for your family, sneak gifts into the stockings on Christmas Eve. You can have family members open them on Christmas Eve or on Christmas morning. You can either fill the stocking with a couple big gifts or several smaller items. You may even opt to include a gift card, which is perfect for those family members who are impossible to shop for.

…And so were the cards

You may receive some cards from friends and family around the holidays, especially from those who want to send money to help with school or those you do not see regularly. Make it an annual tradition to hang a clothesline in a common area of your apartment or house so that you can hang up any cards you receive. Not only does this give you a chance to look at gorgeous holiday cards, but you will also be reminded of those who love you.

The holiday season is a wondrous time, no matter your age. Having your own place, whether it is a house or an apartment, can give you more freedom to decorate the way you want. Even if you are living with your family, you have more input now that you are older.
