'Ender's Game' is Out of this World

By Makayla Cisneros on January 3, 2013

When it comes to incredible science fiction, Ender’s Game is an enthralling tale that captivates its audience and delivers a beautifully written story that is truly out of this world.

The story is set in a near-future society after two wars with an alien race called the Buggers. With the eminent threat

of a devastating third war the worldwide military, the International Fleet searches the globe for the future officers that will ultimately ensure victory. However, the Fleet’s interest is primarily in genius children. If these selected few have the right characteristics they are sent to The Battle School, a space station for training. The protagonist of the book is Ender Wiggin, one of these selected geniuses.

This novel is an enthralling and fascinating tale. Although the story focuses on children, the striking narrative of genius children strikes an immensely addictive combination of the innocence if childhood meeting the turmoil if a world is in danger. The novel delicately explores intricate issues including a subtle look at the morals of war-making decisions. These deeper issues explored through the genius and also the innocent eyes of children give a fresh perspective that makes this novel entirely unique.

The author, Orson Scott Card, is truly talented when it comes to weaving a plot that is driven by the story and by the characters equally. Card is also great at giving the reader proper hints as to where the story is going without entirely giving it away with clever foreshadowing. This is done primarily in scenes with “higher-up” military character that discuss their plans, however, uniquely without any monologue or explicitly stating what is to come next. This successfully keeps the reader guessing while also giving them a bit of food for thought.

For readers who were captured by Ender’s Game, you will definitely enjoy others by Orson Scott Card having to do with the same story. There are several other titles such as Ender’s Shadow, Speaker for the Dead, Ender in Exile, Children of the Mind. These novels depict the same characters in different times, sequels or as in Ender’s Shadow, Ender’s Game told from another character’s perspective. Each of the novels have their merits and each deepen the overall understanding of Ender’s Game and the wars that the stories surround.

All in all, Ender’s Game is a novel for any book-lover, not just sci-fi fanatics. It will have you entranced within the first few pages and captive until the end.
