Oscars Recap 2013: The Show We Can't Not Watch

By Gigi Peccolo on February 25, 2013

The Oscars are our not-so-secret annual guilty pleasure: we know watching the show will eat up three hours of our time, but we need to know who wore it best for watercooler talk the next day. For those of you who didn’t watch, or even if you did, below are just a recap of some of the highlights and head scratchers of the evening.

  • Argo for Best Picture. The film was the frontrunner leading into the evening, but Ben Affleck still looked genuinely shocked when the winner was announced. Loved Grant Heslov’s deadpan line about being the handsomest guy among Ben Affleck and George Clooney.
  • Christoph Waltz for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. That was totally out of left field for me; I really thought that Robert De Niro or Tommy Lee Jones would take it, with all the Oscar predictions I’ve read. But hey, Herzlichen Glückwunsch!
  • Jennifer Lawrence for Best Actress in a Leading Role. I’d been rooting for her all the way through awards season; I even wrote an article about it! She is ridiculously charming all the time, whether it’s falling down stairs or delivering a straightforward speech. However, when I saw the clips of the other Best Actress nominees, all of their performances looked equally Oscar-worthy. Where’s a tie when you need one? Wait a minute…
  • The Sound Editing tie. Are Oscars allowed to tie? No, seriously, I need to know the answer to this. Can Leonardo DiCaprio and Leonardo DiCaprio tie for Best Actor in any role?
  • The college kids who got to hand the Oscars to the winners. Jealous!
  • Ang Lee for Best Director, plus Life of Pi cleaning up in all the technical categories and Best Original Score. Loved it! As someone who just saw the movie for the first time a week ago, I was absolutely blown away. The visual effects were stunning and the special effects team here definitely earned the award. Same with the score: it complemented the movie so well and was honestly one of my favorite parts of it.
  • Daniel Radcliffe and Kristen Stewart presenting. Fandoms collide! (Now, if only they had been giving the award to Jennifer Lawrence…)
  • Michelle Obama announcing Best Picture. I love the First Lady, but her appearance felt kind of out of place. Then again, is there a better way to get the attention of the American people, especially when you can anticipate what the majority of them will be watching?
  • Charlize and Channing dancing during the opening sequence. Put those dance moves to good use in a musical! This was the night that honored them, after all!
  • Seth MacFarlane as host. Following in the footsteps of fellow controversy-courting Ricky Gervais, MacFarlane delivered some solid laughs early on – regarding Affleck’s Argo snub in the directing category: “Argo tells the previously classified story about an American hostage rescue in post-revolutionary Iran. The story was so top secret that the film’s director is unknown to the Academy.” Less funny: “The actor who really got inside Lincoln’s head was John Wilkes Booth.” Keep it classy, Seth.

The Oscars never fail to entertain, and even when there’s rough spots (looking at you, Franco!), we come back year after year. Why? It’s our chance to hobnob with Hollywood, an opportunity to laugh, cry and cheer alongside our favorite stars. And, if nothing else, it’s a good excuse not to do homework.

I'm currently a sophomore at the University of Denver majoring in journalism. I write for the school paper but I also love writing for entertainment, specifically TV and movies, and ULoop is a great outlet for that. In my free time, you can find me doing newspaper layouts or taking a nap to make up for all the sleep I've missed.
