Get Fit for Spring: The Best Classes at Coors Fitness Center

By Amy Wagner on April 17, 2013

With spring right around the corner, more and more people are thinking about getting in shape. And with a new season, why not make your fitness routine a little less, well, routine? A fantastic way to do that is by simply heading over to the Coors Fitness Center, right here at DU. With a fitness class schedule that boasts more than 50 classes per week, there is truly an option for everyone, no matter fitness level, ability, or preference. But with so many choices, deciding which classes to try might be a bit daunting. This is where I come in, dear DU Uloop readers. Without further ado, here is my list of the best classes at Coors.

Step & Pump

Are you interested in combining your cardio and strength training into one hour-long workout, and listening to modern, energetic dance music while you do so? Step & Pump is for you! Offered every Friday at noon, this class alternates high-energy step aerobics combinations with weight training. Sophomore Shelby Carpenter likes Step & Pump because “it's a good mixture of fast cardio and muscle strengthening. Throughout the hour, you manage to target every area of your body.” The step combos become progressively more complex throughout the duration of the class. If, like me, you are not the most coordinated person, this can be intimidating. Just try it – even though you might not be able to do every combo perfectly, you will still get a fantastic workout, and maybe even enjoy it as well!  Not convinced yet? Cardio Blast

Offered in both 30- and 60-minute formats throughout the week, this class takes variety to a whole new level. Even if you do this class regularly, you will never be bored, because the instructors always change the format. According to the Coors Fitness Center website, this class has been known to include a “rotation of kick boxing, glide, drills, steps, bosu, tabatta and cardio strength.” This class is particularly ideal for anyone who has reached a stubborn and persistent fitness plateau, as changing workouts is a common and effective remedy for this.

Zumba

Many individuals have a tendency to get bored with working out, because it sometimes feels like…work. But what if you could get in an hour of cardio by dancing to exciting salsa, merengue, samba, and hip-hop music? Well, you can…with Zumba! Sophomore Samanntha Rehman loves Zumba because “the instructors are so energetic and fun – before you know it, you have been groovin' for an hour. What a way to get your cardio in!

Cycling

With 17 classes per week being offered this quarter, there's truly a cycling class to fit every schedule, whether you like to exercise at sunrise or sunset. Most instructors avidly participate in road and indoor cycling alike; knowledge of both types allows them to incorporate all types of training into each class. Better yet, if you're a road cyclist being kept inside by snowy weather, this class will allow you to train year-round. This is an intense cardio workout that includes high-intensity intervals, sprints, and long climbs. To me, the fun atmosphere, killer workout, and fast results easily make this the best fitness class at DU.
