Uloop Inspiration: Getting Ideas Week After Week

By Amy Wagner on April 19, 2013

With nearly 40 articles and eight months of writing for Uloop behind me, I am intimately familiar with generating new ideas for articles week after week, as do my fellow Uloop writers, whether they have been writing for one week or 30. So, where and when does this inspiration come from?

When I first became a Uloop writer last summer, I told my friends about my new activity over lunch one day. Although I was incredibly excited, I was also unsure – what on earth would my first article be about? I asked them for ideas, and they graciously responded with a plethora of inspiration. Some of my best ideas for articles have come when walking to class. We all do it every day; why not make it productive by doing a bit of brainstorming? You never know when that next idea will transpire, and it just might be while making your way to your 8 AM political science class.

Those of you who know me in person, or have simply been reading my articles for some time, know that I love working out. I’ve discovered that spin class seems to be a prime spot for Uloop ideas to strike. I’m not entirely sure why, but I’m not really one to look a gift horse in the mouth either.

I think we’re all guilty of making life decisions in the shower from time to time. Well, a random fact about me: many Uloop ideas have struck me while in the shower. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has experienced this. (To you vigorously shaking your head over there: just admit it).

Looking over all of the campus events I’m invited has also been known to inspire many an article. Behind every event is a dedicated person or group who would absolutely love to get the word out there about their event, and your campus editor might even give you a few extra points for writing about an event in advance. Going along with this idea, every campus has a huge amount of student organizations, clubs, and alliances. Simply find out who is in charge, ask if they’d be willing to answer a few questions, and you’ll have an excited individual ready to tell you all about what they do. I guarantee that their passion will make for a great article, and it will help them make more people aware of their organization. It’s a win-win situation!
