The 2013 USA Pro Cycling Challenge is Here!

By Amy Wagner on August 23, 2013

Today marks Stage 5 of the 2013 USA Pro Cycling Challenge. This stage takes place in Vail and features a 10-mile time trial with a total climb of 1,694 feet. The race began on August 19th “with its biggest opening day hurdle ever,” made up of three 22-mile laps, and will conclude on August 25th.

The USA Pro Cycling Challenge is a stage race, meaning that it is divided into seven parts, or “stages,” which take place over seven days. It is held annually and consists entirely of road bicycle racing. Because the race takes place in Colorado, it features altitudes that often start at over 7,000 feet and frequently exceed 12,000 feet, posing a significant challenge even to the most seasoned professional cyclists.

The race was announced on August 4th, 2010 during a press conference held by former Colorado Governor Bill Ritter and Lance Armstrong on the front steps of the Colorado State Capitol Building. The governor and former pro cyclist informed a crowd of roughly 1,000 people about the event, including that the inaugural race was set for August 2011. It was originally known as the Quiznos Pro Challenge, as the Colorado-based sandwich chain had contacted Ritter with a sponsorship proposal upon hearing rumors of a stage race coming to Colorado. The name of the race was changed in early 2011 to become the USA Pro Cycling Challenge, in an attempt to create a more global brand for the race. In hindsight, this was a wise decision, as it is one of only two 2.HC (’2′ denotes a multi-stage race, while ‘HC’ denotes the highest category of race) cycling races in the United States. It is now considered one of the country’s most important pro cycling events.

Rick Schaden, owner and co-chairman of the race, explained in 2011 that it denotes “an opportunity to put a stake in the ground in the U.S. right here in Colorado” for the sport of professional cycling. He also mentioned that the USA Pro Cycling Challenge offers “the most challenging competition on American soil.” Sharing in the enthusiasm, legendary cycling broadcaster Paul Sherwen, who has been involved in 27 Tours de France, said that the location was well-chosen. “We all know that Colorado is a very special place. It’s synonymous with cycling.”

The USA Pro Cycling Challenge also has a significant and overwhelmingly positive impact on the state economy. Governor Hickenlooper estimated in 2011 that the race would generate upwards of $100 million for Colorado. Even if the impact does not quite reach this figure, millions of dollars are nontheless pouring into Colorado’s economy on a yearly basis as a result of the race. Whether you’re a cycling fan or not, most would agree that this is a tremendous benefit for our state.

As a native Coloradoan who couldn’t care less about most sports but occasionally follows cycling, I am excited to watch the 2013 USA Pro Cycling Challenge progress. Like many Coloradoans, I’m proud that such an important race has come to our beautiful state. It is not only a landmark event in professional cycling, but it also offers a boost to Colorado’s tourism and economy. And that’s something we can all enjoy.
